December 2020

December 2020

On December 6 and 7, Kory and I had a little getaway to Island Park. We stopped and visited with my parents for a bit and then went up to the Marriott at Mack’s Inn and checked in. We went to dinner at Pond’s Lodge and drove around a bit. Originally, we had planned to do some snowshoeing, but we ran out of daylight.

Caleb went on a fun group date where they made gingerbread houses. On December 12, McKenzie graduated from ISU with her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. We celebrated the virtual ceremony via YouTube and cheered when we saw her name on the screen. We had a group celebration on December 15 at our house and had some great soup that Greg made and enjoyed visiting and celebrating McKenzie’s achievement. We also listened to Caleb practice his song for sacrament meeting. He sang Kory’s song, “The Night the Savior Was Born,” and Kory accompanied him.

On the 17th, we had a drive-through nativity as a ward party and Kory was one of the greeters. On the 19th, I got ambitious and painted the study. Kory and Austin and Leah worked on a puzzle and Phoebe helped Andy make a gingerbread house. On the 23rd, Kory and Morgan and I were the only ones home, so we did some Christmas shopping, then got some delicious hot chocolate and watched the Owens Family Light Show, something we do each year.

On the 24th, we took the kids who were around (most were with Lynette, but she had COVID so some were trying to stay away) to Smitty’s for breakfast. That night, Kory and I went caroling with the Gee Family. My brother Shawn had recently bought a bus to remodel, but they dressed it up for caroling and it was a fun caroling bus—much warmer than riding around on the hay bales.

On the  25th, McKenzie brough her family over early to share gifts and play a bit. Later, the rest of the kids came from Lynette’s and opened their gifts. Then we hung out, ate, did puzzles and played with the Nintendo Switch that we bought for the family.

On the 28th, we attended the funeral of Jesse Lovato, our daughter Madison’s father-in-law. We were all devastated when he contracted COVID, was hospitalized for over a month, and eventually passed away. He was such a good man. We had a rosary and visitation at the Wood funeral home and then went out to the Lewisville cemetery for his burial. It seemed too young (age 49) to lose such a good man.

On the 30th, Kory’s dad came to town to visit. He took us and our kids out to Olive Garden for a nice dinner. On the 31st, Phoebe flew to California to visit her roommate Carlie. Kory and I took the kids who were around to Josh and Kasey’s for some pizza and to visit with his brothers’ families. After that, we dropped Caleb and Morgan off with her Andrus cousins. We had a very mellow New Year’s Eve, toasting in our kitchen and watching the lightshow from London on Youtube.

All in all, 2020 has been very strange! We feel fortunate that our health and jobs were not impacted in the way that some have had to endure. Hopefully things can get back on solid ground by the end of 2021.

Pie Face

Chloe had her tenth birthday and she asked for the game Pie Face. Yep, you've seen it. The one where everyone takes turns getting whipped cream in the face. Here are some precious moments. Chloe also got a little fort-making kit for her birthday, so we've had these structures in the family room for a few weeks now.

April 2023

April 2023 On April 1 and 2 we chilled and watched General Conference. On the first, we got a new cat to replace Todd. This cat’s name is Taco, she is a girl, and she’s a tortoiseshell calico. She and Binx have taken quite a while to warm up to each other, but I think we’ll get there. She is cuddly like Todd, so we all like that.  On April 4 I watched Season 3 of The Mandalorian with my dad. On the 5 th , Kory and I took Austin and Leah to the Bee’s Knees for a birthday dinner. They have really great food there and it was fun to visit.  On April 6, we had BYUI Graduation. It was fun to be there, since I’ve missed the past year due to my cancer. On the 7 th , Kory, me, and Caleb babysat for Austin and Leah. It was fun putting the kids to bed and singing with them. Stevie loves the song “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” so we sang that a bunch. On April 8, Kory and I went on a little date. We drove up to Driggs and had dinner at O’ Rourkes and then stopped and visited with my parents on t

Kory's Story

I just wanted to record this for our family history. When Kory and I were engaged, we went to Salt Lake to talk with someone at CES to see about re-applying to teach seminary. At the time, they indicated that he could re-apply, but they didn't seem positive about the likelihood of him getting re-hired. At that time, we decided not to pursue teaching again. Later that year, CES announced that there was no longer any block on people who had been divorced teaching seminary. Again, we talked with some people, but still felt that the chances of him getting hired were not good, because he would not be able to move if necessary, which is usually the case with new hires.  In Fall of 2015, Kory had a strong impression to check with the pre-service director and see what he would need to do to try teaching again. We still knew that the chances were not great, but he felt that he should pursue it. He began attending the class for pre-service seminary teachers, and was assigned to student te
