March 2023

On March 4 I played at the stake baptism, then went and got a massage. It helped somewhat with the neuropathy in my hands. That’s the main side effect of the chemo that I’m dealing with. I’m taking medication for it as well, but I still have pretty much constant tingling in my hands and feet.

On March 12, my mom made a birthday cake for me and we had a little pre-birthday celebration for my 52nd birthday. She made lemon sour cream pound cake—my favorite. On the 13th, Phoebe woke me up with a call from Kory. He had forgotten his laptop to teach early morning seminary, so I jumped in the car and drove it to him. He had his whole class come outside to the car and sing happy birthday to me. That was just the first of all of his classes. He facetimed me throughout the day, having each of his classes sing to me. Some of the calls were during my classes, so my students and his got to face time! It was pretty funny. To make the day a little more fun, I brought doughnuts to both of my classes. That night, Kory and I went to the Teton House for dinner. I had salmon and he had seafood pasta. It was great.

On March 15, I went to dinner with some members of our department and a visiting author, Christian McKay Heidicker. We ate at this new sushi place in Rexburg that was quite good. He was a really entertaining conversationalist, and we went to the reading afterward and he did a great job. It’s fun to be feeling well enough to go to department stuff, although I was really thinking a lot about being home in bed.

On March 17, we had a party at Austin and Leah’s for Andy’s sixth birthday. We had a good time playing in their newly finished basement and had doughnuts from Carsten’s Bakery to celebrate her birthday.

On March 18, Kory and I went to a Big Band dance sponsored by the Skyline High School jazz band. Lots of his students were there and they had Sound Alliance from BYUI perform. Kory and I had a good time pretending we knew how to dance.

On Wednesday after work, Kory, me, Phoebe, and Chloe drove down to Utah for our Spring Break trip. We spent the night at Halle and Barry’s and then headed out to the airport first thing on Thursday. Thursday was also Chloe’s 17th birthday. Years ago I told her if she read all of the Harry Potter books we would go to Harry Potter World. Well, she read them all three times! So, this is our last Spring Break with her before she graduates (next year she will be with her mom) so we decided to splurge and go to Florida. We flew to Orlando, got our rental car, and headed out to Cocoa Beach. We got in a little late and just enjoyed relaxing at our Airbnb which has a pool. Kory and I watched some March Madness and then we all went to bed.

On Friday, we went to the beach! Right when we walked onto the beach, we saw everyone looking into the sky because a rocket was launching from Cape Canaveral. It was fun to get to see that. After that, the girls had fun playing in the surf, making sandcastles, and laying in the sun. I headed back early to get ready and teach my classes on Zoom. That night we ate at Florida Seafood Bar and Grill. It kind of had a Texas Roadhouse vibe. We had lobster for an appetizer, and then I had shrimp tacos. Back at home we watched more March Madness.

On Saturday, we enjoyed a slow morning and then headed to Universal Studios. Once we were in, we headed straight to Diagon Alley and rode the ride in Gringott’s bank. It was fun seeing all of the animatronics as we waited in line. The ride itself was super fun. After that we rode Hogwart’s Express to the Hogsmeade Village. We ate lunch at the Three Broomsticks—fish and chips and butterbeer. Then we rode the Hippogriff ride and the ride in Hogwart’s. That one was so cool because they made it feel like you were flying on your broom  behind Harry and through a quidditch match. It was great. After that the girls waited for an hour and half to ride the Hagrid ride. Kory and I were too exhausted, so we found a place to sit and waited for them. We were all worn out by that point and just headed back to our car and home.

Sunday was a mellow day. The girls went to the beach and Kory and I watched our ward church on Zoom.  Monday I was busy with work most of the day, so Kory took the girls shopping. We did all get together to watch the sunrise that morning. It was beautiful. Tuesday we packed up and flew home. All in all, it was a fabulous vacation. HagHh

On the 30th, we moved Caleb home from BYUI and on the 31st we moved Phoebe out to an apartment with a friend in Idaho Falls. It’s always kind of a rotating door here. We were sad to see Phoebe go, but know it’s a good move for her. She also took Todd the cat with her, so we were all in mourning about that!

Pie Face

Chloe had her tenth birthday and she asked for the game Pie Face. Yep, you've seen it. The one where everyone takes turns getting whipped cream in the face. Here are some precious moments. Chloe also got a little fort-making kit for her birthday, so we've had these structures in the family room for a few weeks now.

April 2023

April 2023 On April 1 and 2 we chilled and watched General Conference. On the first, we got a new cat to replace Todd. This cat’s name is Taco, she is a girl, and she’s a tortoiseshell calico. She and Binx have taken quite a while to warm up to each other, but I think we’ll get there. She is cuddly like Todd, so we all like that.  On April 4 I watched Season 3 of The Mandalorian with my dad. On the 5 th , Kory and I took Austin and Leah to the Bee’s Knees for a birthday dinner. They have really great food there and it was fun to visit.  On April 6, we had BYUI Graduation. It was fun to be there, since I’ve missed the past year due to my cancer. On the 7 th , Kory, me, and Caleb babysat for Austin and Leah. It was fun putting the kids to bed and singing with them. Stevie loves the song “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” so we sang that a bunch. On April 8, Kory and I went on a little date. We drove up to Driggs and had dinner at O’ Rourkes and then stopped and visited with my parents on t

Kory's Story

I just wanted to record this for our family history. When Kory and I were engaged, we went to Salt Lake to talk with someone at CES to see about re-applying to teach seminary. At the time, they indicated that he could re-apply, but they didn't seem positive about the likelihood of him getting re-hired. At that time, we decided not to pursue teaching again. Later that year, CES announced that there was no longer any block on people who had been divorced teaching seminary. Again, we talked with some people, but still felt that the chances of him getting hired were not good, because he would not be able to move if necessary, which is usually the case with new hires.  In Fall of 2015, Kory had a strong impression to check with the pre-service director and see what he would need to do to try teaching again. We still knew that the chances were not great, but he felt that he should pursue it. He began attending the class for pre-service seminary teachers, and was assigned to student te
